CHILDLESS MOTHER, MOTHERLESS CHILD
Solo exhibition at Gallery 3H+K, Pori, Finland 25.10-17.11.2024

Lana Haga's installation explores the essence of womanhood, free from the limitations of stereotypes and societal expectations. She crafts a surreal landscape with fluid-filled glass vessels set on mirrored floors, each symbolizing a woman’s capacity to nurture and sustain herself while holding onto her agency. The vessels’ reflections form "impossible" shapes, representing a perpetual source of energy and redefining femininity as a reservoir of boundless potential.

Haga's work challenges conventional portrayals of women as self-sacrificing and instead celebrates their independence and power to shape their own paths. This installation is a deeply personal exploration of motherhood and womanhood, addressing the delicate balance between career and family, and the strength required to navigate these dual roles.

The accompanying audio piece, created in collaboration with singer Julia Åman, adds an immersive dimension to the installation. Water sounds, reverberations, and recordings of women’s voices amplify the visual impact of the endlessly filling vessels, evoking a surreal, reverent atmosphere.

In Childless Mother, Motherless Child, Haga presents women as autonomous figures, channelling their energy to assert their strength and individuality. This exhibition, which includes paintings, collages, and sculptures alongside the main installation, provides an expansive look at Haga's work.

The opening night included a brief performance by Haga, who moved around the installation, pouring diluted, food-grade dye in various colours into water-filled vessels. The dye swirled and dispersed slowly, creating a mesmerising effect enhanced by the vessels’ mirrored reflections and the accompanying audio work. This process served as a unique activation of the installation.
